Secretary Report.    More updates on the web page. Need articles to place in web page, building tips, product reports etc. etc.

I know your asking yourself, if you are an Email newsletter recipient, why am I receiving a newsletter in the mail?

I’m up on Verizon but they still have to work out the bugs, finally got up on the 30th of last month. As to the web site I have not been able to access it to do any updates but this will be fixed this week or next week when my internet access is setup.

As mentioned in the last newsletter I received some information from “West Coast Composites” also know as “Performance Plus” fuel. Yep, Mr. John Craig is back in business and will give us a club discount. The information is shown below. So, what I’m suggesting is that we all get together and figure how much fuel we all need and make it in one purchase. This helps out Mr. Craig and we get a darn good deal as well.

Club meeting itinerary:      This is a new feature to the club newsletter so give me your feed back on this.

This will be discussed at the next meeting.

1.      Next years AMA convention in Ontario . Who will attend the display booth set up.

2.      Water to the field.

3.      Weed abatement.

Up Coming events:                    Nothing until September.

Old Business.        We have been approached by the Marks/Gilman springs club about joining them next year in the Trainer pylon race / World Models War bird race. We would be combining our Trainer pylon race series with their World models War bird pylon race series where each event would be held at the different club locations on different months. This way we would get more people involved in the Trainer pylon racing event and also bring the clubs together for some mutual friendship and comradery. So come to the meeting and give us your thoughts on the subject.

The Redlands airport has asked us to participate in more of their open house events as they where very impressed with the flying and aircraft display at the last show. The question was also brought up do we want to go to the different air show venues and display our aircraft and perform flight demonstrations?

We will need your input on this issue.

Dogs at the field. Their have been several close calls with people almost getting bitten by members dogs. Also dogs running loose in the pits and on the runway. So it was decided that NO dogs are allowed at the field. That means you cannot bring them to the field and leave them in your car.

The issue was brought up again about starting your aircraft in the designated pit areas. That means if you need to adjust your engine, above an idle, you will need to do the run-ups along side of the taxi ways facing either east or west and have the aircraft under restraint either by some kind of restraining device or a helper.  It is always a good idea to have some help when performing any type of engine run up work.

New Business.   The Heli pad is now in operation thanks to Mr. Lee Sylvester. The club reimbursed him for the cost of the materials, $500, with Mr. Sylvester and others providing the labor.

The Heli pad is for hover use only so if you want to do forward flight, or sideways or backwards or whatever type of non hover flight, you will need to use the runway as always. This is to prevent any incursion into the flight regimes of both type of aircraft.

We need to have a club designated trainer who has gone through the AMA trainer/instructor guidelines and can show their ability to train/instruct. This is for liability purposes to qualify for the AMA insurance for the club, the instructor and the student.

Mr. Hill will be talking to the park about getting water out to the field. He will have an update at the club meeting.

Event Report:        The following event report was provided by Mr. Harry Hill from his weekly club newsletter.

This was our clubs Spring 2006 float fly. Though not too many of our own members showed up, we still had a pretty good turn-out.

One of our guests brought this quarter scale cub. As Rick Ogden said, there isn’t anything prettier than a cub on floats. He might be right but I think we had some pretty good looking planes on the water that weren’t cubs.

I didn’t get to see a lot of them fly as I took the duty manning the frequency board at the Pomona Club field for the first couple of hours. Tom Bright came over and relieved me after he got a chance to fly some. Thanks Tom.

I believe the owner of this plane told me it is a Cermark Bobcat. I don’t know if that’s correct but I do know it’s a pretty good looking plane. This one was all done flying by the time I got back to the lake but it was still in one piece so I think it must have flown okay.

Since this was the first time I had flown at Prado Park I was surprised at how small the lake got when taking off and landing. There is actually plenty of room but it doesn’t seem like it when you are first starting out. We were very lucky with the weather. It was cloudy and cool most of the morning with only a light breeze blowing right down the lake. There are enough trees that the surface was very well wind protected until about 2:00pm then the wind shifted and everything got a lot more exciting.

This Mariner belongs to Doug Orabona, a former club member who decided to join us for our float fly. It was good to see Doug again, he’s lost a lot of weight, 240lbs, since last year and told us his is feeling so much better and is much happier. His plane is a good flier, the design of the hull pushes the water away from the hull and prop and eliminates much of the spray other boats suffer with.

The Seamaster belongs to me. I got it from Chris Hickok over a year ago and finally got to get it wet. Almost wetter than I wanted when on my very first take off it ground looped on me and was almost swamped. Tom Widmer and I took a boat ride, retrieved the plane, brought it onshore, and it fired right up and after that it didn’t have any more pilot problems. This boat, pun intended, does great once it gets up on plane but it sure rides low in the water until then. The plane does all the basic aerobatic maneuvers and managed to stay out of the trees and above the surface of the lake even when landing.

This cub wasn’t quite as lucky. It is a forty sized cub and though it flew just like a cub it managed to find a tree on the far shoreline. Our boat crew had to get right across the lake as some fisherman looked like they were claiming salvage rights. It didn’t take long, though, to get the recovery job done and once back in the pits the plane looked very repairable. It was moving very slowly when it hit the tree and appeared to just snag a wing and spin around before stopping. I think the repairs will be minimal.

The Tiger II is a 60 sized plane that also looks pretty good on floats. It was flown by one of our guests so I didn’t get any information on it. He was all finished flying by the time I got back over to the field. Tom Widmer flew the Hobby People Aerophibian when he wasn’t retrieving planes with his boat. His throttle stuck wide open and he had to fly until out of fuel but it got down with no problems and I’m sure he’ll get that problem fixed before he brings it out again.

Richard Rittmiller did an excellent job as CD and organizer and kept everything moving along smoothly. Rick Ogden was the assistant CD and test pilot on a couple of planes and Tom Widmer did double duty as pilot and boat captain. Tom Bright flew some and then took over the frequency board at the Pomona field so that I could fly, thanks Tom.

The Pomona Club was very gracious in allowing us to take over their frequency board during our float fly; their president told all the flyers not to hang a card without checking with us first. It worked out very well and we had no conflicts during the float fly.

I’ll see y’all at the meeting or next week at the field.

Harry
